The Washington Monument viewed from across the Idal Basin in front of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Washington DC. The Washington Monument is the world's tallest obelisk, standing 555 feet 5⅛ inches ( m) in height[1] and made of marble, granite, and sandstone. It was designed by Robert Mills. The actual construction of the monument began in 1848 but was not completed until 1884. One difficulty that is visible to this day is that the builders were unable to find the same quarry stone used in the initial construction and, as a result, the bottom third of the monument is a slightly darker shade than the rest of the construction.
