KHOWST PROVINCE, Afghanistan — Soldiers with the 509th Infantry, Task Force Spartan, explosive ordinance disposal unit, inspect the deadly aftermath of an improvised explosive device on a street near the wood market in Gardez Feb. 18. The IED was discovered by local Afghan Uniformed Police and destroyed by an Afghan National Army explosive ordinance disposal unit. This detonation was historic because it was the first time an Afghan EOD unit was called on to destroy an IED without assistance from coalition forces. A Scout unit and an EOD unit from Forward Operating Base Gardez supervised the operation, but played no hand in it.
