Umbilical cord. Light micrograph of a section through an umbilical cord . The umbilical cord is the tube that connects a developing foetus to the placenta inside a mother's womb. The two umbilical arteries, which bring oxygen and nutrition to the developing foetus, are the round structures at top and centre. At bottom is the umbilical vein, which takes away waste products.
