Surgical thread. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a knot tied in surgical thread of 10/0 gauge thickness. The thread is only 50 microns thick ( millimetres). This is less than the thickness of a human hair. Such threads are made from microfilament nylon. Debris attached to the knot includes red blood cells.
