Statue of Roald Amundsen with Hurtigrute "Nordlys" beyond, Tromsø harbour, Troms, arctic Norway.

Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), one of Norway's greatest explorers, undertook expeditions to both the Arctic and of course the Antarctic, where he was the first to reach the South Pole ahead of Captain Scott. The Hurtigrute, or coastal express steamers, operate all year round carrying mail, cargo and passengers, between Bergen in the south to Kirkenes in the north east.
