Dutch minister Henk Kamp opens Solaroad world's first solar bicycle cycle lane in Krommenie Netherlands 2014.
November 12th, 2014, Krommenie, The Netherlands. Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs Henk Kamp rides an electric bike through a banner, opening the world's first bicycle lane made from solar cells. Riding next to him is the representative from Noord Holland Province, Elizabeth Post, who has been a strong proponent of this innovative test track. Both have a broad grin on their face: opening a bike path is normally strictly a local affair, now all national media are present plus journalists from many other countries: the BBC did a stand up on bike and we spotted German, Russian, and Chinese camera crews. This cycle lane is special: only 70 meters (230ft) long, it's the world's first bicycle lane made from solar cells. Installed October 2014 in Krommenie, 25 kilometers north of Amsterdam, the pilot project is 70 meters (230ft) long. It will be extended to 100 meters (330ft) by 2016. The bike path is made from concrete slabs of by meters ( ) with a translucent top layer of tempered glass, which is about 1cm thick. Underneath the glass are crystalline silicon solar cells. The initial stretch is capable of producing enough energy to power three homes. The choice of a heavily used bike path was deliberate as it offers a more realistic test object.
