As, however, any dis-cussion of the latter involves vexed questions asto collaborators, we will consider them in our nextchapter, when dealing with the first pupils whomthe masters fame attracted to his studio. Inde-fatigable as was Rembrandt, and jealously as heguarded the time he desired to consecrate wholly tohis art, we cannot but marvel that such an extraordinary mass of workshould have been accomplished by one man. A whole series ofportraits painted at this period remains to be noticed : those whichthe young artist, faithful to a habit he retained throughout his life,painted either from himself, or from his intimates.
