Blockade Runners to Spain Memorial, Glasgow

A memorial to seafarers who defied the blockade of Republican seaports in Spain, imposed by General Franco, during the civil war there 1936-1939. Unveiled in 2019, it is on the banks of the River Clyde. It was commissioned, organised and unveiled by the Shipping Branch of the Glasgow Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) trades union. Thirten British Merchant Navy ships were sunk by Franco's forces (sea and air) and 35 merchant seamen died. Eight Royal Navy sailors were killed when the HMS Hunter hit a mine off Almeria. Presumably this was an accident as the British government was not supporting the blockade runners.
