Great Barrier Island is located 90km north west of Auckland City and has a 2012 population of about 850 people. With a land area of 285 Square km it is the fourth largest of New Zealand's offshore islands. Cars and trucks are permitted. The island is connected by passenger and car ferries. The Great Barrier Island Ferry Island Navigator runs between Auckland City and Tryphena wharf on Great Barrier Island with Fullers passenger ferries serving Tryphena and Port Fitzroy. The BBC reality TV series Castaway was filmed on the island.
