In June of same year was transferred toBrainerd, Minn., to work for the Northern Pacific, under C. Congdon, my cousin. In fall of same year I returned toPennsylvania and went into the furniture business, contin-uing it for five years. In the spring of 1878 I returned to Brainerd, again to work for the Northern Pacific. In 1884 .1. C. Congdon left the service of the company and I was made foreman. In view of thefact that he was too far away to meet the committee person-ally, we thought it would be the next best tiling to have himmeet in this way, and wrote him for his photo and writtensketch of his career, from which we present the following,in his own words: I was born at Nelson, Tioga county, Pennsylvania, July 9,1850. My father being a furniture manufacturer, I was atan early age put in the paint shop to learn the trade. At Paul. I was transferred there as assistant foreman underE. E. Arle.
