Female Farmer Lesley Matheson and her Highland Cattle, Brue, Western Isles, Scotland, UK

Island crofters Kenny and Lesley Matheson were disillusioned during the BSE outbreak between 1986 and 2000, when the farming country came to a standstill and UK agriculture was on its knees. They had been previously rearing Blackface sheep and only receiving £25 a lamb compared to £40 in the 1980’s. “The whole idea was to take more control of our future and breed pedigree livestock that breeders would want to buy and beef that people would want to eat – over the past 15 years the Highlander has more than answered both of these requirements.”
