Walkers near Beachy Head on the undulating South Downs Way in East Sussex, approaching the cliff-top Belle Tout Lighthouse

The cliff-top Belle Tout Lighthouse was operational until 1902, when it was replaced by the Beachy Head Lighthouse at the base of the cliffs. In 1999, a system of hydraulic jacks was used to move the entire building back from its precarious position on the edge of chalk cliffs that are prone to severe coastal erosion.
