The first church in Portland—the church overwhich Parson Smith and Parson Deane presided—has been the subject of a monograph compiled by thelate Marquis F. King, President of the Maine Gen-ealogical Society, of which only one hundred copieswere printed. As with it. were identified a numberof the families referred to herein, we present an oldwood cut of the second building, which w^as built andturned over to the parish 17 Jidy, 1740. The pews onthe lower floors were reserved for the two plans of the ground floor, showingthe pew holders in 1753 and in 1788 have been pre-served and copies of these plans redrawn, are alsopublished in this number, the plates kindly loaned byDr. Alfred King of Portland.
