Plague hospital, Bombay, India, 1922. Bombay, today called Mumbai, was in 1922 part of colonial India, under the rule of the British Empire. From the mid-1890s to the early 1920s, a series of major epidemics hit India, including the bacterial infection known as bubonic plague. The colonial authorities implemented public heath measures, carried out inoculations, and built hospitals, but the plague alone caused an estimated 10 million deaths. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
