All Saints Day at Powazki Cemetery in Warsaw Poland.


During All Saints in 2006 visitors pay their respects at the grave of singer and poet Czeslaw Niemen one of Poland's best loved post-war performers who had died earlier in the year and is buried in the catacombs of the Powazki Cemetery in Warsaw. During All Saints and All Souls thousands of Poles visit graves of ancestors to light candles and offer prayers. At historically important cemeteries such as Warsaw's Powazki numerous people use the opportunity to also visit the graves of important figures from the country's past. Powazki is considered the most important cemetery in Poland in that sense and is the resting place of aristocrats and political leaders artists musicians and writers as well as a memorial for the victims of WWII and other national tragedies.
