RAF Sea King 1989 Crash Site Scottish Mountains Highlands Scotland. GAV 1022-86


Sea King Search and Rescue Helicopter based at RAF Lossiemouth suffered an engine failure on one of its two turbines, the happend has the aircraft was lifting off just after dropping members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue team who were engaged in an active training exercise. Also on board were members of a BBC film crew who were working on a documentary about the work of the Lossiemouth 202 'D' Flight SAR fIlm maker Paul Berrif was able to record the incident from inside the aircraft and after it went down. Thankfully no one was seriusly hurt though the aircraft was badly damaged and was some weeks later cut into two parts before being airlifted by a Chinook from RAF Odium and transported to a lorry and trailer positioned in a layby on the A86 road. Rather than scrap the Aircraft it was extensivly striped down and rebuilt to fly once more.
