Pre-Hispanic gold artifacts on display in the Gold Museum Lima Peru
Precious metals were mined by pre-columbian people living in Peru and most South American countries long before any Europeans arrived. Recent archaeological evidence has revealed that various cultures like the Moche for example thrived in this land as far back as 2000 years. Many, it is known had wonderful craftsmen in their societies and Gold was crafted to glorious effect for royal jewelry and certain ceremonial usage. Burial tombs on the coastal deserts of Peru and many in parts of the Andes mountains have yielded a wealth of historical knowledge over the years and learned men in the archaeology and anthropology fields are continuing to discover new revealing facts about the lives of these ancient peoples. This museum on the outskirts of Lima was once owned privately by it's owner and collector Don Mujica Gallo but is now known as the Lima Gold Museum. The Inca and pre-Inca ethnic artifacts are beautifully displayed and catalogued in a series of purpose built underground 'strongrooms' and give an amazing insight into the pomp,splendour and many cases suffering in these ancient tribal cultures.
