CALENDARS - CLOG ALMANAC - OR WOOD-LOG CALENDAR Clog calendar - wood engraving from the 1905 edition of Moses B. Cotsworth, The Rational Almanac. The illustration portrays four logs, but these are the four edges of a single square-sided almanac. The church festivals and important dates are recorded in images and dots, along the length of the clog. For example, the Hay-rake marking 11th June, marks the Hay Harvest, as well as he feast of St. Barnabas. The image of the man portrayed upside down (top right) marks October 13, and the festival of St. Edward the King Confessor who was crucified

Edward the King Confessor who was crucified head downwards. The spear (third down in the second log-side) represents St. George, the patron saint of England. At the bottom of the same side are the two keys that represent the festivity of St. Peter (who is reputed to have the two keys of Heaven and the Church). Some of the symbols hark back to long-forgotten festivities: the star, marked second down on the first long-side, represents the original date of Christmas, which was 6 January: it was later adopted as the date of the Epiphany. The wheel, half way down this same side, is actually the symbol of the true lover's knot, marking 14 February, the day of St. Valentine.
