Cleaning the carriages of the Shatabdi Express, Mysore Railway Station

A large city 100 miles southwest of Bangalore, Mysore has become something of a rival to its larger neighbour with a thriving IT sector. It is however a more quaint and picturesque city with an historic economy built on the sandalwood trade, a wealth of dilapidated pre-independence buildings and a huge walled precinct at its heart – the Maharaja's Palace. Inside (you pay to enter) is a complex of Hindu temples and a vast palace set among extensive lawns and flower beds. On the edge Mysore is Chamundi Hill, a pilgimage destination that can be reached via a climb of more than 1,000 steps. Part way up is a massive holy Nandi (bull) carved from stone and on top there are imposing temples. EDITORIAL USE ONLY
