The congregation first tried to get a minister fromScotland, but they thought the influence of the ColonialCommittee of the Free Church was against them, andthey failed. Then, at a meeting on 9th July, 1845: The Sessionagreed to petition the Presbytery to make application on. REV. WILLIAM LEISHMAN, t^ 619 the behalf of this flock for the services of Mr. Leishman,during the next six months, and, if consistent with thelaws of the Church, they pray that he may be ordainedso as to qualify him for the legal performance and regis-tration of the acts of marriage, baptism and burial,according to the statute law of this Province. This is ofgreat importance to give stability and union to the con-gregation after so long a period of disappointment andfluctuation, and of deprivation of such services in theabsence of an ordained pastor. On the 26th Nov., 1845, a call from the St. G-abrielStreet Church was addressed to Rev. W. Leishman. Hewas a native of Edinburgh, and had received his educa-tion at the famous university of that city, sitting at thefeet of Dr. Chalmers in his divinity course. He hadmade his mark at college, and among other prizes hadcarried off the medal in the moral phil
