Spituk Gompa on Spituk Gustor festival day, with large prayer wheel, Leh district, Ladakh, India
The annual Gustor festival, celebrated at the Buddhist Monastery Spituk Gompa, in the 11th month of Tibetan Calendar, is famous for marking victory over evil since the 11th century. The current monastery buildings date to the 15th century. Huge crowds of worshipers and monks come from far and wide to the festival. Near the entrance is a giant prayer wheel that is turned clockwise by the festival goers to send out prayers, which is as meritorious as orally reciting prayers.
