At anearly age he intended to devote himself to the church and made his preparatorystudies in the schools of his native place. At the age of nineteen he came toAmerica and entered College^ Ellicot City, Maryland. The year follow-ing he entered St. Marys Seminary, Baltimore. Having completed his theologi-cal course in that institution, he was ordained by Archbishop Spalding in June,1868, in the Cathedral of Baltimore, where he remained as assistant priest forone year.
