While we have received reports of WHITE VICTORIA ONIONS weighing four pounds each and over, the RED VICTORIA seems to possess the greater capacity for large growth, and bulbs of this variety were successfal in winning the which we offered in 1889 in five cash prizes. These prizes were awarded as follows: The first prize to Mr. John A. Slaymaker, Atkinson, Neb., whose heav- iest onion attained the weight of 5 lbs. 8 ozs. The second prize to Mr. J. D. Egberts, Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo County, Cal., whose heaviest onion weighed 5 lbs. 4 ozs.; Mr. Eoberts also won the third prize, with a Red Victoria Onion weighing 4 lbs. 12 ozs., while J. A. Slaymaker won the fourth prize with a Red Victoria Onion of 4 lbs. 8 ozs, weight. The fifth prize was secured by Mr. James Moss, Westminster, Los Angeles County, Cal., whose largest Victoria Onion weighed 4 lbs. 6 ozs, Mr. Moss sent us a copy of the Los Angeles Weekly Express, of September 12th, 1889, giving a most interesting account of his mammoth onions, which created quite a sensation in Southern Cali- fornia, While it is only with extra cultivation in the richest soils that such enormous weights as these can be obtained, yet the very fact that they have been grown to such remarkable size demonstrates the capacity for large growth inherent in this new race of onions.
