The speed is also indicated electrically. This isaccomplished by having a -|-kw lo-volt generator driven fromthe axle by a chain drive and separately excited by means ofa storage battery. In the generator armature circuit is con-nected a resistance coil of about one ohm resistance in serieswith the low-tension coil of a i-kw transformer ratio 20-1 9o8 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. [Vol. XXVIL No. 23. and a low-range ammeter. This ammeter has been carefullycalibrated and a curve plotted which gives the miles per hourfor all currents. The high-tension coil of the transformer is BLOCK-SIGNAL SYSTEM OF THE NEW YORK .CENTRALELECTRIC ZONE. -ARRANGEMENT OF LARGER COMPARTMENT connected to a low-range voltmeter with a zero center voltmeter has been calibrated for acceleration and givesexcellent results. Both the speed and acceleration are recorded by means ofpointers which are moved by hand and madeto follow the movements of the needles, thepointers being connected by a small steelwire to pens on the recording tables. Penstime every five seconds and every fourthrevolution of the axle, while another penIS operated from push buttons and is usedto special points such as stations, etc. Toobtain the degree of curvature on the curvesa small drum has been bolted to each bol-ster, and these arums have been arrangedto rotate with any relative motion betweenthe car body and the trucks. These drumsare connected by means of a small steelwire to pens on the recording table, anirecords of curves are automatically ob-tained. Two theses are being prepared by seniorson results obtained on the car, a
