The Americana; a universal reference library, comprising the arts and sciences, literature, history, biography, geography, commerce, etc., of the world . are known. Many attain to con-siderable dimensions, especially their are typically saprophytic, but it is nowknown that many of them are more or lessparasitic, also, when the opportunity offers. About 10 families are commonly recognized, four of which, only, will be noticed here. Puff-balls (Lycopcrdacca) are saprophyteswhose branching filaments penetrate decaying wood or earth rich in organic matter, and finallyproduce globular fruits which rise above thesurface. (Fig. 25.) These fruits are filled withtortuous canals whose walls are studded withspore-clubs (basidia) on which the spores areproduced. At maturity the interior tissues ofthe fruits delitiucsce, setting free the spores, which escape into the air a little later as a dustycloud, by the rupture of the fruit-wall. Fromthese spores new plants are produced, but wedo not know the whole life history of thesecommon fungi. Although the sexual organsshould precede the formation of the fruits, theyhave not yet been observed.
