Among the earliest settlers can becounted the Roussos, Boudins, Des Ros-iers, Gretiens, Legaults, and mostly Catholic they depended forreligious services, at first on Escanabaand Menominee, and later on Spauldingand Stephenson, wherever the priest hap-pened to reside, until the fall of first Mass was celebrated by FatherMartin Fox in a small log house of Mr. Bruno Nadeau. Occasionally Mass wasoffered in the house of Isidore Legault,a short distance out in the country. Thusservices were held in private houses untilthe fall of 1887 when the settlers consid-ereil their number large enough to main-tain a church and a priest of their this purpose Mr. Nadeau donated. Mazuret was sent as the 330 HISTORY OF THE DIOCESE OF first pastor, and through his efforts thechurch was plastered and made inhabit-able.
