The new footbridge adjacent to the flour mill and the weir between Aire Street and Mill Lane across the River Aire at Castleford The bridge was opened on July 4th 2008 It was designed by Renato Benedettie and funded by Wakefield Council Yorkshire Forward and English Partnerships at a cost of 4 8 million The design has has been shortlisted for the Prime Minister s Award for Better Public Buildings as part of the British Construction Industry Awards scheme The opening of the bridge is the climax of the Castleford Project group of community improvement schemes and was featured in the first of a four part Channel 4 TV documentary called Kevin McCloud and the Big Town Plan
