Scarab of the Vizier Minhotep, Middle Kingdom, Dynasty 13, ca. 1750–1700 , From Egypt, Memphite Region, Lisht North, Cemetery, Radim, 1920–22, Steatite, blue glazed, L. cm (1 in.); W. cm (3/4 in.); H. cm (1/2 in.), Scarabs bearing the names of nonroyal individuals first appeared in the later Twelfth Dynasty, concurrent with other significant cultural and political developments. Thereafter scarabs were mass produced, primarily as amulets, though they often also functioned as administrative seals
