Silicon wafers and chips. View of two processed silicon wafers (upper right and lower left). The wafers contain dozens of identical microcircuits, which appear as squares. The lower wafer has a test site visible at its centre, which ensures the accuracy of each stage of the manufacturing process. If the wafers pass all their tests, they will be cut up so that each individual square microcircuit may be fitted into a holder for use in circuit boards.
