Funchal is the capital of the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. It is surrounded by hills and is known for its port, gardens and Madeira wine cellars. Funchal's centuries-old cathedral, which mixes Gothic and Romanesque styles, stands out for its carved wooden ceiling. In front of the port is the São Tiago fortress, built in the 17th century. It currently houses the Museum of Contemporary Art, with a large collection of Portuguese works.
