Taenia solium is shorter than the taenia saginata, measuring from2 to 3 metres, as a rule, rarely reaching a length of 6 to 8 metres. Thehead is very small, is provided with four suckers, and with a rostellnmarmed with a double row of hooklets, twenty-four to twenty-six mature segments measure from 1 to cm. in length, 0 to 7 breadth, and contain a uterus with only five to seven branches. Theova are round, of a brownish color, are surrounded with a thick, radially INTESTINAL PARASITES 313 streaked membrane, and in their interior the hooklets of the embryocan usually be made out. Their diameter is 30 to 35 microns. Theycan hardly be distinguished from the ova of the saginata. The lifecvcle of the taenia solium is the same as that of taenia saginata exceptthat the hog is the intermediary host. Fig. 58
