He showed, further,by comparative figures, that nine-tenths of the manufactured com-modities used by the farmers and artisans of our country, suchas clothing, household goods, furniture, implements of husbandry,tools, etc., are as cheap in this country as in England, and inmany instances cheaper. This comes about naturally, for tworeasons, one, at least, of which is often overlooked. (i) A heavy part of any duty imposed on imports is neces-sarily borne by the foreign producer who, in order to enter aprotected market at all, must reduce the price of his goods andsacrifice a part of his usual profit.
