Whenit is softened with hot water, it receives impres-sions which become permanent if it is suddenlycooled. The plates used are those found on theback of the sea-turtle (chelone imbricata). Fivelarge plates are obtained from the middle of thecarapace or upper buckler, and four large onesfrom the sides, called blades, and twenty-fivesmaller plates from the edges, called feet ornoses.
