Cold War medical training. US Navy nurses observing a demonstration of radiation survey instruments as part of the nuclear nursing course at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland, USA, in 1958. The sign on the wall warns of radiation hazards, and a wallchart and books contain information about radioisotopes and the pathological effects of atomic radiation. At this point, in the late 1950s, the Cold War between the USA and the USSR was reaching its peak. Preparations included US armed forces training their medical personnel to deal with the aftermath of a nuclear attack by the Soviet Union.
