View WNW of the forecourt, entrance & burial chamber of Tinkinswood Neolithic chambered long cairn, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, UK. A Cotswold-Severn chambered tomb with a roughly rectangular long cairn aligned E-W. At around 40 tons, the massive capstone of the burial chamber is one of the largest in Britain. Along with pottery, the remains of around 50 individuals were found in the chamber: men, women & children including a newborn baby. There is a burial cist halfway down the N side of the cairn & a Bronze Age round barrow covering two rock-cut pits was discovered close by. Cremated bone & a Roman coin were found in the upper layers of the barrow. The herring-bone walling is part of the post-excavation restoration, the horizontal drystone walling is original.
