Some of the endodermal cells of the yolk mass lie along the right side of the chordal cells and when the tail is constricted from the trunk region these cells form the loose column of caudal endoderm. In Stage IV little of it remains (Fig. 4C, 65). In Stage I the notochordal cells begin to shift in position.
