(tt^^mo, a thing fastened).(l) This term denotes generally anything made of anumber of boards joined together. (2) In a morerestricted sense it means a theatrical machineof several stages {tabiilatd), one above the other,which could be raised or lowered by balanceweights. On such stages gladiators called pe£--7/iares fought in the amphitheatres, and battlesand other scenes were represented. When theywere used in sacrifices, the victim was slaughteredin an upper stage and the priest stood in oneunder the ground, and was afterwards broughtup to be shown to the people with the bloodof the victim upon him. In theatres similarpegmata were employed for the purpose ofchanging the scenery. (3) L
