The best part of the state is the de-lightful Willamette Valley. Considerable gold hasbeen washed from the sands of Oregon and somequartz-mining carried on. It is an excellent coun-try for wheat and livestock. It has several colleges,the Pacific being the oldest and the Willamette thelargest. The Territory of Oregon was organized in1849, including then the present Territory of Wash-ington. Ten years later it was admitted as a war with the Modoc Indians in 1872 was foughtwithin the limits of OHIO. Ohio was once peopled by Indians possessing somecivilization. They lived by bread, rather than game,and cultivated the soil in preference to following thetrail. They built mounds which still attest theirskill in engineering and the largeness of their con-ceptions. But by the time the region began to besettled by white pioneers the inhabitants were sav-ages, with only faint traces of civilization. The firstsettlement was made at Marietta in 1788 by a colonyfrom New England. Cincinnati was founded later inthe same year.
