A 16th-century Roman sea god, Neptune, mounted on a shell-shaped carriage pulled by horses based on an octagonal water fountain on Piazza della Signoria, next to the Palazzo Vecchio, (Florence Town Hall) in Florence in the Tuscany region of Italy. The fountain was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici in 1559 to celebrate the marriage of Francesco de' Medici I to Grand Duchess Joanna of Austria, and a gift to supply clean water to the residents of Florence.
