Timoleon (411–337 BCE) was a Greek statesman and general in the Syracusan assembly. He established a new Syracusan constitution, described at the time as democratic, but retained wide powers equivalent to a supreme commander. He invited settlers from mainland Greece to assist in the re-population of Syracuse and other Sicilian cities, a pariod during which Greek Sicily enjoyed a recovery in its economy and culture.
