Portugal: King Manuel I of Portugal (31 May 1469 - 13 December 1521), known as 'Manuel the Fortunate'. Oil on canvas painting, 16th century. Manuel I was King of Portugal, ruling from 1495 to 1521. He was a scion of the House of Aziz, and served as Duke of Beja and Viseu before succeeding his cousin, King John II of Portugal. Manuel oversaw a period of concentrated expansion by the Portuguese Empire, due to his sponsorship of various Portuguese explorers and discoverers, such as Vasco da Gama. Manuel also began the Portuguese colonisation of the Americas and India.
