Checking wheat for weevils. Scientist testing stored wheat for signs of a weevil infestation using the EWD (Early Warning Diagnosis) P3 (portable version) designed by Systelia Technologies (France). The equipment relies on passive acoustic technology to detect sounds (seen on computer) that indicate the presence of several agricultural pests, including weevils. A weevil is a small beetle that infests a wide range of plants and crops. It has an elongated rostrum at the end of which are cutting mouthparts. These are used to bore through the outer layer of grain to gain access to the food within and to lay eggs.
