"Oliver Cromwell's last interview with his daughter," an engraving from 1857 that imagines the death-bed scene and Cromwell's grief. Elizabeth Claypole (1629-1658) was the second and favorite daughter of Cromwell. Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), English political leader and military commander, was instrumental in the English Civil War (1642-1651) and became head of state as "Lord Protector of the Realm" from 1653 until his death in 1658, the same year of his daughter's death. The monarchy was restored two years later.
