The uric acid calculi cause little suffer-ing as a rule, and are often expelled bythe natural passages when treated medi-cinally, so that operative interferenceshould only be resorted to in exceptionalcases. Similar views apply to the reproduc-tion of biliary calculi. Of course, skia-graphy of biliary calculi is as yet an im-perfect method, cholesterine productsmixed with bilirubin or calcium phos-phate or carbonate, being the most fa-vorable objects. While a negative resultin the case of suspected calculi in the uri-nary tract can be taken as a positive evi-dence of their absence, provided thetechnique was blameless, the same cannotbe said of biliary calculi. On the otherhand, even a faint skiagraphic reproduc-tion of biliary calculi proves their pres-ence to the expert reader, and rendersexploratory laparotomy for suspectedcholelithiasis unnecessary. As I have often insisted, th
