Nigella seeds, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Nigella seeds, also known as black onion seeds and black cumin, come from the Nigella sativa plant. The seeds resemble those of onions but Nigella sativa is actually a member of the buttercup family. The seeds are used for their strong bitter tasting flavour in sweets, alcoholic beverages and as whole seeds on bread. Magnification: x25 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
