He saw once morehis cherished plan crumbling to the ground, and thepossibility of a strong Slav kingdom establishing itself,with the help and under the protection of Russia, inopposition to weak, tottering Turkey and in rivalry tothe new Bulgarian monarchy. It became necessary,therefore, to press certain events, the inner purport ofwhich I knew, and which, personally, I considered to beUnwise on broad lines of statesmanship.
