Speech patterns, schlieren image. Close-up of the lips of a man making fricative speech sounds. Schlieren photography is an imaging technique that is used to show changes in the density of fluids and gases such as air, caused here by the air turbulence produced when speaking. This image allows the study of the aero-acoustic production of fricative speech sounds. A turbulent jet of air is formed when speaking fricative speech sounds such as 's' and 'z'. The interaction of this jet with the teeth and lips (left) can be observed.
