LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 Steam Locomotive number 4464 “ Bitter “ at Alresford Station on the Mid Hants Railway during the railway’s Spring Steam Gala on the 13th February 2014. The Mid Hants Heritage Railway also known as “ The Watercress Line “ ( due to watercress production in the area ) running 10 miles (16 km) in Hampshire Southern England from New Alresford to Alton where it connects to the National Rail network. 4464 Bittern is a London and North Eastern Railway Class A4 steam locomotive. Built for the LNER in 1937 at Doncaster Works It is a Pacific currently certified for mainline running and It is one of six to survive into preservation. The A4 class was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley to power high-speed streamlined trains. The wind-tunnel-tested,[2] aerodynamic body and high power allowed the class to reach speeds of over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h), although in everyday service it was relatively uncommon for any steam-hauled service in the UK to reach even 90 mph, much less 100. The most famous in the class “Mallard “ is the holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives at mph ( km/h). The record was achieved on 3 July 1938 on the slight downward grade of Stoke Bank south of Grantham on the East Coast Main Line,
