Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) was an outstanding artist of German Renaissance. He spent early half of life in Basel, where he was friends with Erasmus, whose Praise of Folly he illustrated and of whom he painted many portraits. He became painter to Henry VIII in 1535. Among his best paintings are George Gisze, The Ambassadors, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Erasmus, and Sir Richard Southwell. This painting, titled Sir Henry Wyatt. It was long thought to be Sir Thomas More. Holbein painted Wyatt twice - This one is in the Louvre. Another is in the National Gallery of Ireland.
