Canewdon village lock-up (& stocks) of c 1775, restored 1983. Cnut (Canute) camped at Canewdon before the Battle of Assandun (1016) where he defeated the Saxons led by Edmund Ironside to become King of England. The community is recorded in the Domesday Book 1086.
